GLADoS Stole my Life

The Companion Cube from the video game Portal.

I hate Portal 2. Now, before the fan community jumps all up and down on my knickers about that statement. I hate Portal 2 because it’s entirely too good, and that makes me sad.

I just finished this superlative game. It does everything right. It’s beautiful to look at. The controls are tight and responsive. The levels are amazingly designed (although I think some of the original Portal‘s levels might have been a bit better). There’s this great story, well told, woven throughout the whole of the game. It is an experience like no other, and every minute was an absolute joy to play.

Which is great. Except… there are no other games like it. There’s nothing, as far as I can tell, even close. And that makes me sad, because even though Portal is fun to re-play, nothing is like that first experience. Now that’s over, and there’s nothing on the horizon to equal it.

Oh, sure – we have Skyrim to look forward to.  And I guess Crysis 2 is fun. Theoretically, Half-Life 2, Episode 3 is supposed to finally come out this year, and I haven’t finished Episode 2 yet, so that’ll be awesome. I still have to finish Fallout: New Vegas, among other games.  And, of course, I have my game system/campaign setting to work on.

But the first-play experience for Portal 2 is over, and that makes me sad. I’ll miss GLADoS.  And… well, consider this a spoiler-free review. Go get the game (if you haven’t already) , find time when you can play it by yourself, and turn the volume way up. The dialog- just as in the first one – is simply amazing.

Game system related news soon.
